The international youth organization AIESEC held a mock United Nations Climate Change Conference in Beijing last November 27-29. Zekai Wong is now the Co-Chair and Executive Director of Global Sustainable Leaders Forum(GSLF), which is jointly advocated and supported by the United Nations Youth Program, UN Secretary-General Climate Change Support Team and nearly 100 global youth organizations. As a major event in Asia Pacific to celebrate United Nations International Year of Youth, the forum gathered more than 200 speakers (the honorable speakers including UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon(online), Boao Asia Forum Secretary-General Long Yongtu etc. GSLF runs four main programs: Annual forum, China social innovation fellowship, youth organizations development project and 2012+ Youth Sustainable Initiative. Simply put, two insightful stories of AIESECers in India. They both called it incredible. Enjoy!

I began my AIESEC adventure 2 years ago. I experienced AIESEC in different ways and in different countries. Throughout that time I have experienced so much more than the average student. I have met people from all over the world, organized events, attended conferences all over Sweden, China, and now India! I have been a part of a high-performing team, lead a local chapter of AIESEC as president and have had many, many more exciting experiences that have enriched my life and career. However, they say that nothing in your AIESEC experience compares to your AIESEC Exchange. We say that Exchange is the most impactful and life-changing experience you can have in this organization, and so far, my time in India has proved this statement to be true; and LPU has definitely played a role in that. A few months back I found myself chatting to the VP DT, a member of LPU online. Soon after, I was matched to an internship through AIESEC LPU. I have now been in India nearly for nearly a month, and I’m loving every minute of it. The people, the food, the AIESECers, the crazy roads, the chai… it is all wonderful. Because of my prior AIESEC experience, I have been lucky enough to be involved in AIESEC in LPU, attending both a Local and National Conference of India since getting here. I really value the time I have spent with the newly elected EB members of LPU and meeting many other cool Indian AIESECers at the conference. I truly find it inspiring and comforting that AIESEC is the same wherever in the world you go; yet, it’s a nice contrast to the differences in the AIESEC host cultures as well. The journey I’m on has begun even though my internship had not yet officially commenced. I already feel like I’m piling up loads of memories to bring home with me.

In February 2010 I boarded a flight to India without any real clue as to what would meet me on the other side. Of course, I had prepared as well as I could, still. Who knew that the next four months I’d be spending working as an intern (as a linguistic consultant) in Hyderabad would be such an experience! Arriving at my destination and getting on with the work was a great experience. I truly enjoyed every single day working with my students who are sociable, cheerful, smart, and talkative! Work fed my metal detector curiosity, my desire to learn, and my analytical skills. My students were so eager to learn about foreign cultures. Having classroom with such a melting pot mix of cultures helped me too; I got to learn about Korean and Chinese microdermabrasion cultures as well. I was also lucky with having fellow teachers and even with our schools principal who welcomed me as if I were a member of the family. They were always supportive and ready to help. My Indian colleagues showed me tankless water heaters incredibly warm hospitality and even welcomed me into their homes. They have been generous to a stranger like myself who had no way or repaying their kindness. I really never thought that I’d have such an amazing time and unforgettable moments in an incredible country like India. How amazing the culture and the spirit of the people! Of the many fantastic experiences, one highlight is meeting other AIESEC hard money lenders trainees from all over the world and sharing our experiences. I had a great time with my flatmates and other trainees: we had get-togethers every week and trips nearly every weekend. Living with six other international trainees, we became a multi-cultural family. We learned to get along like any ordinary family too, to compromise when there is conflict, to support each other when facing difficulties—with understanding our jobs or our new culture. We took turns cooking our national favorites. Best of all, we got to discover India together, visiting breathtaking monuments such as the Taj Mahal in Agra, the Golden Temple in Amritsar, and the Hawa Mahal in Jaipur. We saw the culture, language, and even religion change even as we journeyed within the same country that is India. Prior to my internship, I have been a member of AIESEC for a year and a half. Returning to Morocco after my stint in India, I have decided to help other students have a chance to experience what I did. I took a position as the Outgoing Exchange Coordinator within my Local Committee. My job is to find international internships for Moroccan students and supervise the team that works with me. For the future Exchange participants, visiting a place like India would be such an incredible eye-opening experience. More than anything else, it’s a wonderful opportunity for self-discovery; it will introduce you to aspects of your personality you did not know existed, whether it shows you previously untapped reserves of patience and fortitude or a fun, playful, and goofy personality you never got a chance to display at home, only time will tell. With a new place and people, you get as much as you give. In order to truly understand a place, you have to be willing to get out of your comfort zone and look beyond the superficial. My time in India helped me to realize that I am passionate about people, new cultures, and working with children. It also opened my eyes to see how things in my own country could change to give our youth a broader view of the world and give them a better chance in a world that is becoming more and more globalized. I’ll always have India in my heart. I hope that my experience will inspire, motivate, and encourage other people to live the AIESEC experience, which lives to its promise of being life changing and incredible.
